Mikel Arteta has been named Premier League Manager of the Season, earning top recognition from fellow football decision-makers after a landmark campaign with Arsenal.
The Gunners boss edged past a strong shortlist that included Pep Guardiola, Andoni Iraola, Brentford’s Keith Andrews, Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris and Manchester United’s Michael Carrick.
Arteta guided Arsenal to their first league title in 22 years, turning three consecutive runners-up finishes into the final step of winning the trophy. Arsenal led the standings from October and wrapped up the championship with a match still to play.
The Spaniard inherited the job in December 2019 at what was arguably the most difficult stage of Arsenal’s Premier League history. This season’s success, however, represents the payoff from more than six years and a half of rebuilding and refinement.
