The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Imo State has mourned the death of veteran broadcaster and well-regarded sports analyst, Richard Asiegbu Snr, describing it as a painful blow to the country’s sports and media landscape.
In a condolence statement endorsed by the Association’s Secretary, Tunde Liadi, Imo SWAN said Asiegbu Snr leaves behind a lasting body of work in sports broadcasting, journalism, and media administration, built through many years of consistent dedication.
SWAN noted that the late broadcaster was especially remembered for his distinctive commentary voice on Radio Nigeria Network Service sports broadcasts. It added that he progressed steadily in the station’s set-up, eventually reaching the position of Deputy Director of Sports and Outside Broadcast before retiring from the Federal Civil Service.
The association also pointed to his roles beyond radio presentation, citing his service as the former Director-General of the Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC) and his membership on the board of the West Africa Broadcast & Media Academy (WABMA). It said his leadership style, professional approach, and deep enthusiasm for the craft helped motivate a generation of younger broadcasters across Nigeria.
SWAN further stated that Asiegbu Snr’s death on May 15, 2026, at the age of 71, has left a significant gap in the sports media industry, highlighting how his lifetime commitment to high standards, discipline, and mentorship shaped both colleagues and successors.
Imo SWAN prayed for the repose of his soul and extended sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the wider sports community.
