Brazil forward Neymar revealed that he broke down alone in the dressing room after returning to the pitch following a 981-day absence, coming on in the second half during Wednesday’s 3-0 World Cup victory over Scotland in Miami.
Return after a long wait
The 34-year-old had not appeared for Brazil since 2023. That year, he suffered a serious knee problem in October and has since found it difficult to get back to his best.
His recovery left him initially listed as doubtful for a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad. However, the situation worsened again last month when a calf issue forced him out of Brazil’s first two matches at the tournament.
Despite those setbacks, Neymar finally made his international comeback against Scotland. He was met with loud support from the stands, with fans chanting his name as he returned to action.
What Neymar said after Brazil topped Group C
After Brazil finished at the top of Group C, Neymar spoke to reporters about the emotional moment following his appearance.
- He said he went to the locker room by himself and “shed a few tears” after coming back.
- He described it as an “immense relief” to experience the World Cup again.
- He said the feeling carried gratitude, adding that he thanked God for allowing him to relive the moment.
World Cup record and mindset for the next round
Neymar is Brazil’s leading all-time scorer, having netted 79 goals. He has now taken part in four World Cups, contributing eight goals and four assists in tournaments since his first appearance in 2014.
Reflecting on the change around him, Neymar said the time away meant it felt like a different team, and that he was viewing things with “fresh eyes.”
He also expressed satisfaction at being able to return and represent Brazil at a World Cup, saying it was a chance to defend the national team after so many years.
Next match: second round in Houston
Brazil’s next assignment comes in the second round, where they will face the runners-up from Group F. The match is scheduled for Monday in Houston.
