Mzansi Remembers Gee Six Five

South Africans have taken to social media to remember the late Nkosingiphile Olpha Selepa, affectionately known to many as Gee Six Five, on what would have been her 66th birthday today,

The talented gqom sensation succumbed to COVID-19 complications in late 2020, despite her not being alive are celebrating the day on her behalf. Fans have taken to social media to pen impassioned messages wishing her a happy heavenly birthday.

Her son Fika Selepe, celebrated her birthday in a heartfelt post and said his mom was loved by everyone dearly. "Happy 66th birthday in heaven Mom.  You were dearly loved by me and the rest of the family. #GeeSixFive #ObaniLababantu," he wrote.
@kealey2_0 celebrated her life by writing "Mam’GeeSixFive giving us an iconic song then immediately passing away is something I’ll never understand."
@@chedetachment, tweeted "She came she saw she left. Happy 66 birthday to GeeSixFive in heaven."

Gee Six Fives' music touched the lives of many people in the country. Her hit single Obani Lababantu went viral on social media and many loved her fierce energy and catchy lyrics. The singer was a fierce woman who is remembered for always following her dreams.

Speaking to SowetanLIVE, she advised many people to explore their own talents and never be afraid of what people will say.

“I started composing the song in July, writing and singing until the lyrics were in my head. The plan was to do ingwijikhwebu or something that will take the country by storm."

“The message in all this is that it is never too late to become what you want to be. Don’t be afraid to explore your own talents because of the naysayers. I just wanted to do what was never done before,” she said.

Although she became a meme and some ridiculed her song, Somizi said she would have loved to work with her. At the time of her passing Gee Six Five was a Ph.D. student in Education and the University of Kwazulu-Natal honored her.

"Ph.D. student in Education and musician Ms. Olpha Selepe, known by her stage name Gee Six Five, is trending since the release of her popular song Obani lababantu. The music video is quickly approaching 100,000 views on YouTube and the single is charting in the iTunes SA top 20."
