Veteran Actor MacDonald Ndodana Mathunjwa Passes On

It is a sad day for the South African Film and Television industry following the passing of legendary actor MacDonald Ndodana Mathunjwa in the early hours of Tuesday,  01 June 2021.

The news of his passing was announced by his daughter Zanoxolo Mathunjwa on Twitter.

"RIP daddy,  #hearbroken MacDonald Ndodana Mathunjwa passed away today," Zanoxolo wrote.

Bra Mac, as he was affectionately known, was a brilliant actor and music producer best known for his role in SABC's successful drama series Home Affairs. Others will remember the veteran actor for his role as Oupa in the SABC1 comedy series Khululeka.

He also starred as Tshibaphi in the SABC1 drama series Intsika, in 2011. One of his biggest TV gigs saw him in the SABC1 mini-series uGugu no Andile, based on the Shakespearean play Romeo and Juliet, in 2008. Soap opera lovers will also remember him on the old or defunct Generations on SABC1 as Mawande's father.

Since the news of his passing, tributes and touching messages of condolences have been pouring for the legendary actor and the Mathunjwa family.

"So sorry for your loss Noxy, whenever your dad played a role he embodied the father figure and didn't look or sound like he was acting. Very authentic person through the screen, may his soul RIP," Ncumi Gouwe wrote.

"Oh lilele ixhego [the old man is resting] I've enjoyed watching him over the years. May his soul rest in perfect peace and I pray comfort upon you and the family. Now I'd suggest you look forward to that great resurrection morning when the trumpet shall sound! God be with you and the family...," Asiphe Nyabali wrote.

"This man taught me alot about the SA constitution on Khululeka in the late 90s.
"Did you know?" RIP," Siyabashaya said.

"Awful news to wake up to. Thanks to you and your family for sharing him with the whole country. He's one of those actors I grew up on. Thuthuzelekani nilusapho. Aphumle ngoxolo [May you find comfort as his family. May he rest in peace]," Ta'uRadebe said.


Mathunjwa's work speaks for itself and he had been harnessing talent though Mathunjwa Film Production. The production company had just wrapped up the shooting of a movie titled Uzozwa Ngami, which was screened on March 21 this year at Bahama, and had invited all aspiring actors and actresses to audition for a new movie, which was shot in Kwa-Thema. The movie, titled The Chosen, has been written by Cynthia Sedith and was directed MacDonald Mathunjwa.
